About this book

Cadet Life at West Point is by Hugh T. Reed. A letter dated Jan. 10th, 1911 from the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, is addressed to Reed and says a book has been given to the public that is full of valuable information, particularly useful to young men who contemplate entering this academy.

The text gives marks for recitations: a 3 for a perfect recitation, 2.5 a good mark, 2 fair, 1.5 medium, 1 poor, .5 very poor, and a zero a complete failure. The text says recitations go on every day except Saturday afternoons and Sundays. A table showing disposition of candidates carries notes that records were lost by fire in 1838 and that alternates were first appointed in 1878. A spoken lesson tells the listener to get a small stick out of the candle-box, put a bit of the rag over it and pour a little oil on the rag, and to rub it on the rusty place, rub hard, since elbow grease is what counts most.
