About this book

Deep inside a mountain, Curdie and his father Peter mine silver for a king who uses it to serve his people. Their cottage stands above the tunnels, where the day's dangerous work gives way to fresh air and family life. The opening recalls Curdie's help in protecting Princess Irene from goblins and his decision to remain with his parents when the king invites him away.

This fairy tale joins descriptions of the mountain's hidden riches with questions about duty, generosity and good judgment. Later, Curdie moves through the royal household with strange companions, seeking a route to the king's chamber. A housemaid carries his warning to the servants, and a young page stands up to an angry butler. The contrast between humble helpers and bullying authority gives the magical scenes a practical concern: recognizing honesty and finding the courage to act on it.
