About this book

On a hotel terrace in Tangier, an exiled king's followers prepare an expedition to restore him to power in Messina. Baron Barrat returns with money, jewels and young volunteers gathered in Paris, while Colonel Erhaupt waits for news from a yacht. Their polished manners conceal bargaining, mistrust and doubts about the king's sincerity. Countess Zara, formerly an English art student, brings another report from Messina into this uneasy circle.

Richard Harding Davis builds his adventure novel around the competing motives behind a royal cause. In a later scene, Patty insists that the campaign serves a good purpose, while newspaper reporter Archie Gordon fears she will be cheated. Her demand for loyalty draws him into the expedition. The conversations give readers a close view of political persuasion, personal allegiance and the difficulty of deciding whom to trust.
