About this book

Cicely and Merry Cardew have grown up at Meredith Manor with ponies, private lessons and parents who arrange every comfort. The teenage twins know little of hardship, and their friends Molly and Isabel Tristram find their sheltered outlook limiting. The Tristrams look forward to school in Kensington, while a visit from Maggie Howland introduces a girl remembered for her extraordinary influence over other people.

L. T. Meade sets these different experiences of girlhood beside the practical question of who controls an education. In a later conversation, Maggie challenges her mother's prospective husband over money left by her father and insists that some of it should support her schooling. This novel for young readers brings family authority, social standing and a determined girl's ambitions into the same room. Its appeal lies in the friction between comfortable protection and the wish to shape one's own future.
