About this book

The travellers take rooms in a Marseilles hotel furnished with art nouveau furniture, metallic bedsteads and hot and cold running water in every room, without heavy rugs or draperies. The account of Algeria and Tunisia describes travellers going to Tlemcen to paint mosque architecture, to Biskra for health, and to Tunis to pass time amid exotic surroundings.

The desert itinerary through Laghouat and Figuig includes creaky diligences and travel by mule, donkey or camel, with those towns described as practically inaccessible except to the hardiest travellers. The region west of Algiers is described as producing wheat, vines, oranges and other early produce for the tables d’hôte of Paris, benefiting native and colonial owners of garden plots.
