About this book
Cattle and Cattle-breeders is by William McCombie. The contents list names chapters called The Feeding of Cattle, Reminiscences and The Cattle Trade, Then and Now, among others. The first chapter, The Feeding of Cattle, is marked as read before the Chamber of Agriculture. The writer says that Mr Stevenson and some other members of the Chamber of Agriculture have expressed a desire that he should read a paper on his experience as a feeder of cattle.
The narrator says that at the same fair next year they had bought, as they found on comparing their books, ninety-nine cattle, mostly stirks. Windsor, the text says, was bought from George Brown, Westerton of Fochabers, for two hundred guineas, and took the first prize at Edinburgh in the aged bull class. The text regrets that Lord Southesk's fine herd suffered so heavily by the rinderpest, and adds that this has been indeed a national loss.
