About this book
Cerebrum by Albert Teichner says "For thousands of years the big brain served as a master switchboard for the thoughts and emotions of humanity" and "Now the central mind was showing signs of decay" and "men went mad". The trouble began in "a seemingly trivial way" when a character named Connor wanted to speak to Rhoda, his wife. A voice that calls itself "the receptionist at Dallas Shipping" says "Mars and points Jupiterward, at your service".
A mechanically-synthesized voice announces that "you are hereby Suspended indefinitely from the telepathic net" and that "all paraNormal privileges are withdrawn". Three men, more shabbily dressed, are shown unsmilingly reading books and are called fellow pariahs, "Suspended for one reason or another from paraNormal privileges". A speaker turns abruptly on Connor with the question "Have you any skills?", and Connor answers "Robotics."
