Peacemaker is a work by Alan E. Nourse, illustrated by Ebel. The teaser says all Flicker wanted was a chance to make the aliens understand, and all the aliens wanted was a chance to kill him while they could. Flicker's mind fights silently and desperately to keep control and to master a frantic urge to writhe and scream in agony at the burning light, while his arms and legs are bound tightly to the pallet.
One alien voice asks "But why kill it?" and says "We have it sedated almost to death-level now," and another says "I say we've got to kill it!" Flicker whimpers and twists with pain as the light explodes into his eyes, and feels a flash of panic at the sight of two of the aliens at the bottom of the ladder. A heat gun sends the space charts up in wreaths of flame and fuses the chart file into a molten heap of aluminum, and the engines stop throbbing.
