About this book
Charles the Bold, Last Duke of Burgundy, 1433-1477 is by Ruth Putnam. The preface says that in spite of the failure to obtain either a kingly or an imperial crown, the story of those same unaccomplished enterprises contains the germs of much that has happened later in the borderlands of France and Germany.
The preface gives one phrase of Philip de Commines about the master he had once served, Il n'avait pas assez de sens ni de malice pour conduire ses entreprises, and says that if sens is rendered by genius and malice by diplomacy the words are not far wrong. The text says the ex-king of Bohemia made renewed offers of friendly alliance to Charles of Burgundy, with a draft treaty providing that Podiebrad should support the election of Charles as King of the Romans, in consideration of the sum of two hundred thousand florins.
