About this book
Charles W. David's Robert Curthose, Duke of Normandy is a history of Robert, son of Duke William, called the Conqueror, with footnotes citing sources such as Ordericus Vitalis and the Actus Pontificum, and a detailed index. One passage treats the time of Edward the Confessor's death and the plan for the Norman conquest of England. The abbot of Marmoutier obtains from the youthful Robert a confirmation of his father's gifts to the abbey, and Duke William proclaims Robert his heir, with the barons doing homage to him and King Philip of France, the duke's overlord, reported to have given his consent.
In the same passage, Countess Matilda and a council of regents govern during the duke's absence, and when the Conqueror goes a second time to England in December 1067, Robert is associated with his mother in the regency. From that year he appears in some charters as count of the Normans. Index entries also name Arnulf of Chocques, chaplain of Robert Curthose, and places such as Ascalon and Arka.
