About this book
The account of administration describes English sheriffs continuing to govern their wasted shires even in counties affected by a devastating march. The discussion of the Norman Conquest says that an almost complete change in the personnel of English administration was first felt in the higher departments of government. A charter discussed in the book grants Hayling Island, between Portsmouth and Chichester, to the monastery of Jumièges in the name of King William.
The account places Earl Hugh of Chester first among laymen of comital rank. The discussion of Harold records a special journey to York that succeeded in silencing opposition for the moment.
