About this book
Child and Country by Will Levington Comfort is subtitled A Book of the Younger Generation. It is dedicated to the builders of the rising generation, and the foreword says the pieces were written separately over many months. Its stated purpose was to tell of the adventure of making a home in the country, with its masonry, child and rose culture and shore conservation, not to teach readers how to build a house or plant a garden.
One passage describes hiving the first swarm of bees, and another says that after three weeks Comfort opened a newspaper and found it strange. He writes that visitors from town come for week-ends and go back refreshed. Elsewhere a Clovelly rose is held up as an example of beauty, with the rose seen in the arch of a child's hand. Another passage lists thinkers the writer returns to, among them Boehme, Fichte, Froebel and Swedenborg.
