About this book
Faith, grief and the wish to belong run through Edwin Arlington Robinson's poems, which give private doubts a public voice. The opening poem considers people shut out from comfort and asks how belief can answer suffering. Short quatrains turn to ambition, fame and the limits of success, while the ballades use repeated lines to return to friendship, loss and the passing years. The packet's text comes from a 1905 printing of the 1897 edition.
Elsewhere, a painter's devotion to his work and a speaker's memories beside a fading fire bring those concerns into particular lives. Sonnets examine the judgment of other people and the relation between art and its maker. Readers interested in American verse can compare these compact forms with the more conversational voice of the dramatic poems, following how rhythm and recurring images shape reflection on human worth.
