About this book

Children's Classics in Dramatic Form, A Reader for the Fourth Grade, is by Augusta Stevenson. The foreword gives three purposes: to arouse a greater interest in oral reading, to develop an expressive voice, and to give freedom and grace in the bodily attitudes and movements which are involved in reading and speaking. The foreword says the stories are for the most part adaptations of favorite tales from folklore, with Andersen, Grimm, Aesop, and the Arabian Nights having been freely drawn upon.

One piece, The Travellers and the Hatchet, is set last week on a high road, with a first traveller, a second traveller and a carpenter. In another piece a king calls for Christopher Columbus to be admitted, and Columbus asks for ships, sire, to prove plans for sailing in the unknown seas. In yet another piece, Goody tells Eliza that the wicked queen has turned her brothers into wild swans.
