About this book
China and the Manchus is by Herbert Allen Giles. The contents list gives chapter titles including The Nü-chêns and Kitans, The Fall of the Mings, Shun Chih and Sun Yat-sen, among others. The text says that in 1123, Akutêng died, and was canonised as the first Emperor of the Chin, or Golden Dynasty. The text says that in 1127 the feeble Chinese Emperor was seized and carried off, and by 1129 the whole of China north of the Yang-tsze was in the hands of the Nü-chêns.
The text calls Commissioner Lin a name much reverenced by the Chinese as that of a true patriot. The text records that a peremptory order was made for the delivery of all opium in the possession of foreign merchants at Canton. A speech in the text says, “We are initiating the example to Eastern Asia of a republican form of government.”
