About this book

Spoken language, books, government and household customs provide the framework for six lectures delivered by Herbert Allen Giles at Columbia University in 1902. Addressing beginners, Giles distinguishes conversational Chinese from the written language, explains the importance of regional dialects and discusses Mandarin as a medium of official communication. His contents also lead into Chinese libraries, Taoism and the workings of provincial administration.

A comparison with ancient Greece gives the collection a distinctive turn. Giles looks for shared features in houses, marriage arrangements, markets and public entertainment, arguing that similarities deserve closer study alongside differences. Readers can follow how he presents Chinese language and culture to a university audience, moving between practical examples and broader historical comparisons. The lectures suit an interest in the history of language teaching and cultural comparison, while their descriptions retain the assumptions and vocabulary of their period.
