About this book
Musical Portraits: Interpretations of Twenty Modern Composers is by Paul Rosenfeld. Among others, the contents list names Wagner, Strauss, Moussorgsky, Liszt and Berlioz. A prefatory note says some of the material of the book was originally printed in the form of articles in The Dial, The New Republic and The Seven Arts.
The Wagner portrait says that Wagner's music, more than any other, is the sign and symbol of the nineteenth century. The text says that with Wagner the monarchy of the C-major scale is at an end. Two works, Tristan und Isolde and Parsifal, are said to be constructed upon a chromatic scale. The text says that, intentionally and to a certain extent, Rimsky's work is autochthonous.
