About this book
The title page reads Studies in Modern Music, Second Series, with Frederick Chopin, Antonin Dvořák and Johannes Brahms named, by W. H. Hadow. The text says a poor poem may strike a responsive chord in our nature which leads us to give it an altogether factitious importance. The text says that in music it does not follow that, because we feel ourselves stirred by a certain combination of notes, we are therefore in the presence of a real masterpiece.
The text says a figure which consists merely of simple arpeggios or of plain repeated chords can suffer any degree of harmonic alteration without loss of continuity. A list of entries under the heading Chopin as composer names, among others, style, relation to Polish folk-music, structure, melody and harmony.
