About this book
Beethoven's Symphonies Critically Discussed, by Alexander Teetgen, comes with a preface by John Broadhouse. The contents list names, among others, a chapter called Beethoven's Harbingers and entries for Symphony, No. 1, Op. 21 and Symphony, No. 2. Op. 36. The author says that the form of the symphony was, we may say, on the whole dictated from the beginning of things, and that nobody can particularly claim to be its inventor. On the spirit of Haydn's symphonies, the writer says it is, shortly, the spirit of eternal youth.
One piece is called glamorous, with the glamour of Ariel, a spirit of good, the spirit of Shakespeare. A Tagebuch entry of 1816 is quoted as saying God is immaterial, therefore unthinkable, in a passage about Beethoven's religious impressions.
