About this book
The discussion of early Christian hymnology warns that a commentator's opinions can affect the study, just as an author's viewpoint can shape a general treatment of early Christianity. The account describes the civilization of the eastern Mediterranean lands concerned as largely Hellenistic, with mingled Greek and oriental features entering the new religion. The study explicitly says that re-examining the mass of relevant records for hymnological purposes would be too vast a project for the casual student and has not been attempted here.
The discussion traces the restoration of old lyric meters to court poets of the Carolingian circle in the ninth century. The account contrasts extremely scanty hymn sources from oriental cults with much more numerous sources originating in Gnosticism.
