About this book
The Medieval Latin Hymn by Ruth Ellis Messenger sets out to trace the history of the medieval Latin hymn from the point of view of usage. The contents list studies of the early and late Middle Ages, a ninth century revival, processional hymns, and the influence and survival of Latin hymns. An account of Venantius Fortunatus turns to his Carmina for evidence of continuity between classical and medieval Latin poetry.
The discussion of litanies distinguishes psalms from hymns understood as non-scriptural compositions, saying that psalms rather than such hymns were heard in the litanies. The account says festival processions were introduced into the west gradually.
