About this book

The preface calls the book a discussion of the Christian hymn and says the writer's ambition is to be pre-eminently helpful rather than pre-eminently scholarly. The discussion says most ministers select hymns to fit their discourses, with fitness depending solely on logical relations. The text argues that losing the hymn's quickening influence impoverishes the spiritual life of churches and that a mechanical attitude extends to other exercises of divine service.

The discussion gives even a perfunctory use of a hymn at least a social value, while making fuller religious effects conditional on developing its emotional and spiritual possibilities. A quoted criticism says hymn singing in all too many churches has become a mere incident of the service, retained solely because of immemorial custom.
