About this book
Lester Hostetler's Handbook to the Mennonite Hymnary was printed at Newton, Kansas in 1949, and the title page names him as coeditor of the hymnary. It is dedicated to all who love the hymns of the church and want to sing them with the spirit and the understanding. The contents are arranged by hymn groups such as Worship, God the Father, and Jesus Christ our Lord, with notes on the words and music of the hymns.
A section on American hymns lists writers with their dates and first lines, among them Timothy Dwight, John G. Whittier, Ray Palmer and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Entries for single hymns give a writer's dates and a short account: Come, thou Fount of every blessing is credited to Robert Robinson, 1735-90, and Henley is described as one of Lowell Mason's most appreciated tunes. German hymn texts also appear in the book.
