About this book
Christian Mysticism is the Bampton Lectures, 1899, considered in eight lectures delivered before the University of Oxford by William Ralph Inge, D.D., Dean of S. Paul's. The book carries an extract from the last will and testament of the late Rev. John Bampton, Canon of Salisbury. The text says that Mysticism enjoins a dying life, not a living death.
The text calls the second stage, the illuminative life, the concentration of all the faculties, will, intellect, and feeling, upon God. The text quotes Tauler, in his sermon for the Fifteenth Sunday after Trinity, saying that the kingdom is seated in the inmost recesses of the spirit. The text says the obligation of silence was imposed not so much because there were any secrets to reveal, but that the holiest sacraments of the Greek religion might not be profaned.
