About this book
Light, Life, and Love, by William Ralph Inge, offers Selections from the German Mystics of the Middle Ages. The contents list names, among others, Eckhart, Tauler, Suso and Ruysbroek, along with Meditations on the Seven Words from the Cross and Theologia Germanica. The introduction says that to most English readers the Imitation of Christ is the representative of mediaeval German mysticism, but that in reality this beautiful little treatise belongs to a period when that movement had nearly spent itself.
The text says Eckhart tries to distinguish between the interior and the exterior action of God, and that God, he says, is in all things, not as Nature, not as Person, but as Being. A dialogue has the Servitor ask what whispers such flattering things to a soul that is dead, abhorred, rejected, and Wisdom answer, Dost thou not know Me? The text says that the life of Christ is in all ways most bitter to nature and the self and the Me.
