About this book

The Early Irish Monastic Schools, by Hugh Graham, is a study of Ireland's contribution to early medieval culture. The book gives Hugh Graham as Professor of Education, College of St. Teresa, Winona, Minnesota. A list of references includes the Rule of St. Columba, the Rules of St. Carthage and of St. Maelruan, and the Regula Monarcherum of Columbanus, among others.

A text says the monks made roads, cleared the forests, and fertilised the desert, and that their monasteries in Ireland were the sites of our cities. The text says Dungal was a man of wide culture, accomplished too in sacred literature, and at the same time trained in grammatical laws and in the classical excellence of style. The text says Alzog informs us that the sophistical reasoning of Claudius was refuted by Jonas, bishop of Orleans, but much more ably by Dungal.
