About this book
Christianity and Islam in Spain, A.D. 756-1031 is a book by Charles Reginald Haines. The summary of CHAPTER I names the invasion of Spain by the barbarians, the Visigoths gaining the supremacy and the approach of Saracens. The text says Christianity was brought very early into Spain by the preaching, as is supposed, of St Paul himself. The text adds that there are no grounds whatever for supposing that James, the brother of John, ever set foot in Spain.
One account says that Otho had sent a letter, and that John of Gorz refused to carry gifts to the king and say nothing of the letter, saying that the delivery of the letter was his chief duty. The author argues that the gradual advance of the Christian arms in the North brought in its train a more and more complete subserviency to the pope.
