About this book
Christmas Light is by Ethel Calvert Phillips, with illustrations, and is dedicated to the author's mother, followed by a short poem about the night over the hills of Judah. The contents begin with Naomi's Garden, One Sabbath, The Trip to Jerusalem and In the Dark.
The scene is Bethlehem. Naomi lives in the village, where her aunt Miriam keeps the inn, and her friends include Rachel, Rebekah and Enoch, who is lame. Ezra, eleven years old, goes to school in the synagogue. In another passage Naomi can no longer play in the garden, little Jonas guides her steps, and Rachel and Rebekah stay away after talk of the evil eye. In one more, Ezra says he saw Joseph of Nazareth and Mary with the Christ Child.
