About this book
The Man of the Forest is a work by Zane Grey. Chapter I describes the forest at sunset hour as still, lonely, sweet with tang of fir and spruce, with a man who glided on under the great trees. Old Baldy, highest of the White Mountains, is pictured standing up round and bare, rimmed bright gold in the last glow of the setting sun. An excited old woman, whom Dale calls Auntie, tells him that Al has sent back to Saint Joe for his niece, Helen Rayner, who is to inherit all his property.
Dale answers that he wants no wife and is happy in the woods. Bo, gazing at the cowboy, tells her uncle that he spoke kindly to them. Las Vegas accuses Pedro, the Mexican, of being one of Beasley's old hands.
