About this book
The Desert of Wheat is a book by Zane Grey. The first chapter begins late in June, when the vast northwestern desert of wheat began to take on a tinge of gold, lending an austere beauty to that endless, rolling, smooth world of treeless hills. The text calls the country a lonely, hard, heroic country, where flowers and fruit were not, nor birds and brooks, nor green pastures.
Anderson exclaims Smut! and shows both diseased and healthy specimens of wheat, saying that smut is the bane of all wheat-growers. Anderson says the men who claim to know say that wheat will win the war, and that millions of bushels are lost from this smut. Lenore muses to Jake that she would rather have lived back in the early days. Dorn whispers to Lenore that he paid for his father, and Lenore tells him that blame can never rest upon him and that a higher duty awaits him.
