About this book

On a city sidewalk in early spring, a small girl in a shabby gingham dress sits for almost an hour with a white kitten hidden under her coat. A kindly policeman, Jim Cunneen, buys her a cream cake and a doughnut, and learns only that her name is Clematis, that she has no father or mother, and that the kitten is called Deborah.

Bertha B. Cobb, writing with Ernest Cobb, follows the child into a children's home, where she slowly learns its ways and grows close to a teacher, Miss Rose. A serious illness brings Doctor Wyatt to sit by her bed through the night, and he discovers how much she longs to see the country, with its daisies and lilacs.

First published in 1917 in short, clear sentences and twenty brief chapters, this gentle orphan story suits young readers and adults reading aloud to them. Its warmth comes from small kindnesses, a stubborn little cat and the hope of open fields beyond the city streets.
