About this book
Marguerite is by Anatole France, translated from the French by J. Lewis May. The contents list a prefatory letter and Marguerite along with dates including 5th July, 10th July, and 1st November, among others. In the prefatory letter, the writer tells Monsieur André Coq to publish Marguerite if he so desires, but to relieve the writer from all responsibility in the matter.
The narrator says that as the narrator left the Palais-Bourbon at five o’clock that afternoon, it rejoiced the narrator's heart to breathe in the sunny air. The narrator speaks of little Marguerite as that delightful image of unfolding life, though she is but five years old. The narrator says that our lives are only bearable provided we do not think about them. A speaker says that conscious will is an illusion that can deceive none save the vulgar.
