About this book
Coming of Age covers the years 1939-1946. The contents list names entries such as India, May 1943-June 1943, and Iraq, June 1943-August 1944, among others. The narrator describes being in the canteen when the news came over the wireless that war had been declared on Germany. The narrator says guard duties were carried out by members of The Gloucester Regiment, the ‘Glosters’, and that they used to mingle with them in the canteen in their off-duty periods.
The narrator says that after a mile or so they entered Colaba Camp, which was to be their home for a while. The narrator says the teeming masses and the number of people sleeping in the streets surprised him, as did the apparent disregard for personal safety amongst the traffic.
