About this book

Winter has reached Ten Bow, and Connie Morgan has set his sights on a huge wolf-dog seen near Spur Mountain. He hopes to catch the animal and train him to lead a team, despite Waseche Bill's doubts about the plan. Connie also wants to explore the Coppermine River country beyond the Mackenzie, a prospect that brings warnings about distance, mountains and difficult trails.

James B. Hendryx's juvenile adventure follows life in the northern fur country through dogs, snow, camp routines and work along a trap line. Connie learns from 'Merican Joe as they gather pelts and consider how to feed their dogs. Tracks near a damaged trap reveal another problem: a carcajo is raiding their catches. The practical details of trapping and the contrast between Connie's eagerness and his companions' experience give the story its particular texture.
