About this book

Rob McIntyre, John Hardy, and Jesse Wilcox begin their summer expedition among the mountains of the Northwest, with dense spruce forest surrounding their camp. Uncle Dick has arranged a route across the Rockies and down the Peace River along waterways used by fur traders. Under the care of guides Alex Mackenzie and Moise Duprat, the three boys have a chance to test their camping experience against unfamiliar country.

Emerson Hough combines an adventure for young readers with close attention to the work of traveling by canoe. At the mouth of the Finlay, the party checks boats and supplies while the sound of rapids carries upstream. Discolored water and a notched stick help Alex and Rob recognize a rising river. Such moments give the dangers a practical scale: careful observation matters as much as courage. Readers interested in wilderness travel will find camp routines, river geography, and lessons passed from experienced guides to their young companions.
