About this book
Conservation Reader is by Harold W. Fairbanks and is illustrated with photographs and with reproductions of paintings in color. A caption near the front shows the passenger pigeon as an extinct species. The title page gives Yonkers-on-Hudson, New York, and 1920.
One passage says the need for education in the principles of conservation is imperative and quotes Henry Fairfield Osborn on the tide of destruction. Another describes how early people found bronze, then iron, then gold and silver, and tamed young animals, including the wild jungle fowls that became hens, the wild cow, horses, donkeys, sheep and goats. Another describes the sugar pines of the Western mountains, the largest American trees after the sequoias, and says one tree has furnished lumber enough for a house. A poem about birds mentions the meadow lark.
