About this book
The book describes itself as an outline of the history of the Church from A.D. 461 to A.D. 1003, by William Holden Hutton. The text says Acacius, then excommunicated by Rome because he would not excommunicate the Monophysite patriarch of Alexandria, retorted by striking out the name of Felix from the diptychs of the Church. A sidenote reads Schism between East and West, and the text speaks of the first formal beginning of a schism which was ultimately to separate East and West.
The text calls the age of Alfred, who died in 899, equally important, and describes Alfred as a warrior, scholar, saint and pattern king whose heart was given to his people. The index lists entries such as Gregory of Tours, bishop and historian, and Harold Bluetooth, king of Denmark.
