About this book
The book is titled Rules for Compositors and Readers. The rules say that where a noun and adjective or participle, or an adjective and a noun, in combination, are used as a compound adjective, the hyphen should be used. The rules also say that when an adverb qualifies a predicate, the hyphen should not be used.
For preliminary pages referred to by lower-case roman numerals, the rules say that no full points should be used after the numerals. The rules give date examples such as 1897-8, not 1897-98, and from 1672 to 1674, not from 1672-74. The rules also run through a long list of words including formalize, fossilize, franchise, fraternize and galvanize.
