About this book

Courage is the rectorial address delivered by J. M. Barrie at St. Andrews University on May 3rd 1922. The speaker, addressing the Red Gowns of St. Andrews, says the people who have been cared for most and who have seemed most worth caring for, the speaker's December roses, have been very simple folk. The speaker says "I cannot provide you with that staff for your journey" and tells the listeners they shall cut it, every one of them for himself, and that its name is Courage.

Courage is called the lovely virtue, the rib of Himself that God sent down to His children. M'Connachie is explained as the name given to the unruly half of the speaker, the writing half. The speaker, indicating Lord Haig, says that if the Chancellor has always a passion to be a soldier, the Chancellor must be reconsidered as a worker. The speaker says that, were that hour the speaker's own, a handsome part of it would be given to a walk with Doctor Johnson.
