About this book
Curiosities of Science, Past and Present considers the movement of water between sea, atmosphere, and rivers. The account of ocean currents asks the reader to imagine a machine lifting water from a district of the Pacific Ocean and returning it elsewhere on the same day. The explanation of atmospheric circulation describes the great rivers of America, Europe, and Asia as invisible streams returning through the air to their sources among the hills.
The experiment on the even flow of sand calls for dry, sifted silver sand and a tube closed at one end, with a small hole stopped by a peg. The instructions ask for the quantity flowing during a given time to be measured, followed by another measurement over a like time with the tube only partly filled.
