About this book

Tom Bailey remembers boyhood with an adult's eye for his own vanity, impulses and misplaced certainty. Raised in New Orleans after his family leaves New England, he objects fiercely when his father proposes sending him north for school. His ideas about the region come from alarming stories, and his father's explanations gradually turn his dread into anticipation. Thomas Bailey Aldrich's 1870 novel follows this outspoken boy into the school life and friendships of Rivermouth.

A winter snowball fight becomes an elaborate campaign: opposing groups negotiate rules, commanders assign duties, and the North-Enders defend a fort on Slatter's Hill. The boys' solemn military language makes their winter play funny, while the older narrator's memories of former classmates give the opening a quieter sadness. Readers interested in childhood fiction can find both the excitement of neighbourhood rivalries and the distance that memory places between an adult and his younger self.
