About this book

Delineations of the Ox Tribe, by George Vasey, is subtitled The Natural History of Bulls, Bisons, and Buffaloes and exhibits all the known species and the more remarkable varieties of the genus Bos. The work is described as illustrated by 72 engravings on wood, by the author. The text says all hoofed animals must necessarily be herbivorous, or vegetable feeders, because they are possessed of no means of seizing prey.

The text says the skin of the living Buffalo is so dense that it is impenetrable, in many parts, to an ordinary musket-ball. The text says the Buffalo has become rather a rare animal in the colony, but on the plains of Caffraria herds of a hundred and fifty, or two hundred, may be frequently seen grazing together towards the evening. The text remarks that we never see, in a wild state, intermediate productions between the Hare and the Rabbit, between the Stag and the Doe, or between the Martin and the Weasel.
