About this book
The volume deals with the snakes of Europe and includes plates and figures alongside the text. The account describes brood size as varying with species and the mother's age, with large females usually producing more and larger young than smaller specimens of the same species. The discussion of eggs describes their deposition in holes without nests, under moss or decomposing leaves, in sawdust, or in manure-heaps.
The account describes a sort of incubation in large Pythons, with the female coiled over the eggs for six to eight weeks. The discussion says reports of young snakes seeking refuge in their mother's gullet lack satisfactory scientific evidence, while allowing that the question perhaps remains open.
