About this book
Arthur Edward Waite's book is dated London, 1896, and carries the subtitle "A Record of Things Seen and Heard in the Secret Societies According to the Evidence of Initiates." In the preface he explains what he means by Modern Satanism: the alleged revival, in some public form, of a formal religion of the devil, which he distinguishes from a new development of demonology.
Waite also describes a change of mood in France, with Martinists, Gnostics and Kabbalists active again and mystical periodicals founded and finding readers. One chapter is titled "Dealings with Diana" and concerns Miss Diana Vaughan, and it mentions Dr Bataille's memoirs and Leo Taxil. Elsewhere he names Signor Domenico Margiotta, who in 1895 states that he belonged to a society, and says the evidence of a number of witnesses must be rejected.
