About this book
The Devil in Britain and America is by John Ashton and carries forty-seven illustrations. The preface says that, to the writer's thinking, all modern English books on the Devil and his works are unsatisfactory. The preface says the writer has endeavoured to localize the facts and to reproduce all the engravings that could be found suitable to the purpose.
A rhymed account in the text has a speaker declare that no Coroner shall be sent for, since he is Judge and Jury that day. One story in the text says a pig was found perfectly restored to health, as a white witch had predicted, and that the old woman supposed to have bewitched the pig came to inquire after the pig's health. A further story says a lane in a town began to be looked upon with a mysterious awe, for every evening a strange white rabbit would appear in it. A list of old titles names, among others, A Tryal of Witches at the Assizes held at Bury St. Edmonds for the County of Suffolk.
