About this book
Ella Sophia Armitage's study of early castles in the British Isles has plans by D. H. Montgomerie and shows motte-castles from the Bayeux Tapestry: Dol, Rennes, Dinan, Bayeux and Hastings. It is dated London 1912. The book discusses works of Alfred at Athelney, at Limene-muthan and on the river Lea, and the burh at Worcester built by Ethelred. It also tells how Edward the Elder and his sister marked their advance into the Midlands with strongholds, with Watling Street as the dividing line between English and Danish rule.
A chapter headed Motte-Castles in North Wales says such castles are as common in Wales as in England, and argues that they were not built, at first, by the native inhabitants, since the Welsh were then in a tribal condition. It describes the chieftain's residence, according to the Welsh Laws, as a great hall.
