About this book

Lady Rosalind Northcote's Devon, with colour illustrations after Frederick J. Widgery, is a regional account dated 1908. Much of it is local history drawn from old records. One passage deals with Exeter: the Merchant Adventurers and their charter from Queen Elizabeth, the city's two sieges in the Civil War, and the birth of Princess Henrietta there, who was baptized in the Cathedral.

Another passage quotes an old letter from a man asking for changes to his patent for salting, drying and packing fish in Devon and Cornwall, after letters from the Privy Council had stopped it. A further section notes that a different view of the privateers was taken when Elizabeth came to the throne, and quotes Froude on the subject.
