About this book
Highways and Byways in Cambridge and Ely is by John William Edward Conybeare, with illustrations by Frederick L. Griggs. The preface says the highways of Cambridgeshire and the Isle of Ely are usually regarded as unattractive compared with those of England in general. The preface adds that the county does lack the features which most make for picturesque rural scenery, with no high hills and little even of undulation.
The text tells of a royal visit in 1207 from King John, who, for a payment of 250 marks, granted Cambridge a Charter of Incorporation. The book says that large numbers of students migrated to Cambridge when the schools of Oxford were for a while closed by the Government. Barrington Hall is described as the seat of one of the oldest of English county families, the Bendyshes, who have held their estate here since the reign of John.
