About this book
The narrator describes the ending of London as a gradual and almost insensible process, with continuous streets giving way to detached and semi-detached residences on Stamford Hill. The road account says the streets begin again at Tottenham High Cross and continue to Lower Edmonton, while houses begin again at Ponder’s End.
The discussion of drainage says Vermuyden employed Flamands and Hollanders, who were his countrymen and naturally skilled in work of this technical kind. The account attributes the Fenmen’s enmity toward these strangers both to their strangeness and to their work, saying that drainage of the Fens was then highly unpopular.
