About this book

In The Case of General Ople and Lady Camper, an excursion beyond the immediate suburbs of London, projected ever since his retirement from active service, leads General Ople across a famous common. The pony-carriage had been hired for the very special purpose of helping the General pass in review what he called country houses, cottages, or even sites for building, not too remote from sweet London.

Lady Camper is not at home to General Ople, who says modestly that she is of superior station to him and may not wish to associate with him. A walk taken once a day for constitutional exercise compels General Ople to pass before Lady Camper's windows. One speaker asks to be spared the words Quite so, saying a lawyer says them and that they reek of the City of London. A speaker says that the General broke from a proposal on the money question and asks where his consideration for Elizabeth was then.

George Meredith

George Meredith was an English novelist and poet of the Victorian era. At first, his focus was poetry, influenced by John Keats among others, but Meredith gradually established a reputation as a novelist. The Ordeal of Richard Feverel (1859) briefly scandalised Victorian literary circles.
